United Psychological Services Center Opens in Shelby Township

Clinic caters to all ages and features testing, evaluation and non-medical treatment of ADD/ADHD, sleep disorders, memory problems, dementia, autism, emotional and behavioral problems, brain-injury rehabilitation, etc.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich., Jan. 23, 2007 – To assist people of all ages with various health issues, United Psychological Services recently opened a new center – offering diagnosis and treatment for all disorders from psychological/behavioral to brain related – located at 47818 Van Dyke in Shelby Township, Mich. The clinic, which takes most health insurances, can be contacted at (586) 323-3620. For more information, visit www.unitedpsychological.com.

United Psychological Services is an expanded business venture of Washington Township, Mich.-based Brain Evaluation, which was founded by Dr. Barbara C. Fisher in 1989. United Psychological Services plans to have an open house in the coming months. Details will be announced at a later date.

The center offers a full range of services from state-of-the-art neuropsychological testing to treatment, providing a thorough diagnostic assessment to offer the most optimal treatment. The goal is accurate and definitive diagnosis, assessment and treatment of a host of disorders related to the brain, sleep, and long-term psychological and behavioral problems.

“Our mission is to accurately define and treat presenting symptoms by separating the issues of sleep and other causal factors that typically lead to incorrect diagnosis, missed diagnosis and treatment failure due to a lack of knowledge and misunderstanding of the problem,” said Dr. Fisher, a fully licensed psychologist and neuropsychologist who has been in practice for more than 20 years. “The more accurate the diagnosis, the greater likelihood of treatment success. Those who have completed our rehabilitation program go on to lead successful lives and no longer need services.”

The United Psychological Services treatment program for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has been producing long-term successful results without medication. Dr. Fisher specializes in treating ADD/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with behavioral techniques and cognitive training. She is also board certified in behavioral sleep medicine and reports seeing many children diagnosed with ADHD who have a sleep disorder that either adds to their symptoms or mimics hyperactivity.

“ADD/ADHD is a rather controversial, under-diagnosed and over-diagnosed disorder,” she said. “There is an overlap between ADHD and sleep deprivation, and various other syndromes and disorders.”

Additional rehabilitation and cognitive training programs at the United Psychological Services Center provide treatment for all age ranges diagnosed with autism, Asperger’s syndrome, various types of dementia, brain injury, and those suffering from memory problems.

Dr. Fisher is known for her thoroughness and determination to improve lives. She and the United Psychological Services staff are dedicated to providing thorough evaluation and individualized treatment evaluation for all age groups, recognizing the need for graceful aging.

“It is a new day with new horizons, new treatments and new solutions to problems affecting so many,” she said. “Through our new facility, we are eager to help even more people take control. There is no reason these problems ever have to control us.”

Background Information and Other Services

An author of various published articles and three books (including editor of Attention Deficit Disorder, Practical Coping Methods, Second Edition, November 2006).), Dr. Fisher speaks extensively throughout the country on ADD/ADHD, brain injury, sleep disorders, dementia and the autism spectrum. Dr. Fisher is involved in a number of research projects involving the disorders of ADD and Restless Legs Syndrome, as well as seizure disorder.

With the help of the United Psychological Services staff, Dr. Fisher provides on-going assistance to address problematic social skills; tutorial help for math, language, speech and reading; and a brain training program to address injury to the memory and frontal processes. Through her school, Fisher Academy, which opened in 2004, Dr. Fisher teaches children (from the age of 8 to 13 years with cognitive deficits) basic math and language skills as part of a pilot project to re-write educational curriculum based upon knowledge of frontal lobe principles.

Dr. Fisher and her staff have proven that if children are taught in a way they can learn (taking brain deficits into consideration) then learning can be successful. As a result, children are learning to read and write despite their lack of previous success and years spent in special education programs. Dr. Fisher and her staff run a summer camp to “fill in the gaps” and teach basic, building-block concepts (missed in school) for language, reading and math skills. The camp focuses upon the development of social skills and communication in a group setting using structured game activities as well as an assortment of “crafts” and projects.

In addition to her work with United Psychological Services and Brain Evaluation, Dr. Fisher is on staff at Mount Clemens General Hospital in Mount Clemens, Mich.
